Style: Classic and the Beginning of Industrial Furniture Making
Origin: Germany
Regions of Popularity: Europe, America, Far East

When Michael Thonet, a German carpenter, designer, and manufacturer, introduced his consumer chair No. 14 in 1859, he could never have imagined that this product would one day become the most produced and best-selling chair in the world.
Born in 1796, Michael Thonet is undoubtedly considered a pioneer of industrial design. Although Thonet had created and patented various tables and chairs before launching "Chair No. 14," it was this piece that reached all corners of the world—equally popular in the Far East and America.

One of the most notable features of the Polish chair style is the use of bentwood in its construction. These chairs are crafted to showcase elegance and delicacy. You may also hear this style referred to as "bentwood."
This method was invented by Michael Thonet in the 19th century. The process involved thoroughly heating wood in saturated steam until it became pliable enough to bend without cracking. The wood used is typically highly durable. The steaming process takes place in large ovens, after which the wood is manually shaped into molds to achieve the desired curves.

Because the method was first introduced to Iran by a Polish immigrant, these chairs became known locally as "Polish chairs." Many of you may recognize examples of Polish chairs as versions of Chair No. 14, the first chair crafted by this German designer, also called the "King of Chairs."

One of the main reasons for the popularity of these chairs is their simple, minimalistic design, which also makes them highly economical. Their initial success was in Europe, where the lightweight, simple style appealed broadly, especially to cafés, restaurants, and hotels. The chair consists of six main pieces and several screws and bolts, allowing for quick and easy assembly.

These chairs are widely used in public spaces such as restaurants, coffee houses, and cafés. However, you can also use them at home to create a unique and attractive décor. They work well around dining tables or as seating beside study desks.

The Paria chair is designed with inspiration drawn from Thonet’s chairs. It combines the design elements of the Thonet chair and a similar chair designed by IKEA. In Paria’s design, the backrest and support are made slightly stiffer and more enclosed to better cover the back and waist for enhanced comfort. The lower part of the backrest incorporates a smaller, more densely spaced version of Thonet’s characteristic crossed form. The legs maintain the traditional open layout of the original model, with simple, clean lines and no connecting braces between them. For additional comfort, the seat is upholstered and slightly raised rather than recessed.

The Paria chair is suitable for cafés, kitchens, and dining areas.
